Akin has made a tough film in the past about Turks in Germany, Head On. He has also made a vivid documentary about Turkish popular music. The Edge of Heaven is also tough but more audience friendly because it deals with death and grief in a moving way. Le scaphandre et le papillon (English Corner)
A fine and profoundly humane film. In 1995, editor at Elle magazine, Jean-Dominique Bauby, had a stroke which left him with Locked-in Syndrome. He died in 1997. However, despite his initial wish for death, he opted against self-pity and chose life, even though it was seen through only one eye and he could communicate out by one single eyelid. (…) -

Harmony Korine has come a long way in film-making and in his general outlook on life since he wrote Kids, with its pessimism about young New Yorkers, when he was in his early 20s. Gus Van Sant has been making smaller, more ’cinematic’ films in recent years, after Elephant. Here he is back in school, amongst a group of skateboarders. Olmi says this will be his last film. An interesting choice of themes, very Italian. A religious professor becomes disillusioned with cerebral knowledge and books and nails a hundred precious manuscripts to the library floor and then opts out to live life with the marginalised on the banks of the Po, becoming their spokesperson and saviour – (…)
