The central character’s name is Elvis but his behaviour is not that of a king. Rather, this is a Texan reworking of a genre popular in the 1960s and 1970s where a seemingly angelic stranger ingratiates himself with a family and then proceeds to change them one by one, sometimes redemptively, otherwise malevolently. Pasolini’s Teorema is the cinema classic of the genre. Another striking (diabolical) example is Dennis Potter’s Brimstone and Treacle.
The audience gets to know the dark secret almost immediately so the suspense is in watching what the stranger will do and when the family will discover what is happening to them. The context is that of a born again pastor in a rather fundamentalist church (the son is campaigning for the high school to re-introduce creationism to counter evolution). At first it is hard to believe that this nice young man is so malevolent though we know he has reason to be. We are charmed by appearances and manners.
This is a first film by director James Marsh. It is accomplished rather than outstanding. Part of the interest in seeing the film is Gael Garcia Bernal (Amores Peros, Fr Amaro, Motorcycle Diaries) in the central role. William Hurt is the pastor. Clearly, the context means that this is also a film about God, faith, testing of faith and loss of faith.

Un conseil : rester dans la salle jusqu’au bout et ne pas raconter la fin… Le sujet est classique : un jeune homme à la recherche de son père qu’il n’a jamais connu. Le père, pasteur baptiste fervent prédicateur, oppose au jeune homme, Elvis, une fin de non-recevoir : il a en effet une nouvelle vie, femme et enfants. Point barre.
Que va faire le fils (magistralement incarné par Gael Garcia Bernal) ? ? ?
A partir de là le film nous mène de surprise en surprise : le spectateur malmené ne comprend bientôt plus rien aux réactions des personnages. Tout paraît énorme, le trait est forcé, c’est trop…Le bon pasteur se révèle être un chasseur implacable : pauvres biches… Le fils rejeté, qui paraît vraiment un bon garçon, ne recule ni devant l’inceste ni devant le crime : il joue du couteau et de l’étouffoir sans s’émouvoir. Faut-il y voir le processus d’une vengeance implacable ? Sommes-nous bien dans un drame psychologique ?
C’est là l’erreur. A la dernière minute le film bascule dans la farce, par un tour de passe-passe qui pourrait bien vous faire quitter la salle dans un grand éclat de rire… Morale de l’histoire : à pasteur, pasteur et demi …
