Un voyageur, the autobiographical documentary by director Marcel Ophüls, is fascinating, revealing, overindulgent, slightly naïve, and utterly charming, just like the film’s director and star. Whether recalling his family’s flight from France during World War II, celebrating Barbara Stanwix legs in the The Lady Eve, or calling Michelangelo Antonioni "scum," Ophüls somehow exudes charm and goodwill. But this consistency of tone also restricts the film.

Ophüls directed some of the most acclaimed documentaries on human atrocities, notably his holocaust film The Pity and the Sorrow (1969). But that willingness to explore dark subjects is absent from his own life’s story. The darker memories of childhood, career, and his particularly difficult marriage are greeted with gentle smiles and oblique explanations.

Still, the wealth of stories in Un voyageur make the documentary more than worth seeing. One of the film’s most delightful moments involves Ophüls debating with Jeanne Moreau and Madeleine Morgenstern, Truffaut’s ex-wife, whether Truffaut had an affair with Ophüls’ wife. The opinions range from distinct possibility to absolute certainty, all without Ophüls losing that charming smile.
