A worthy film. A rather romanticised picture of boat people, conned by smugglers, crammed on to a broken down boat and, finally, left drifting in the Mediterranean. They receive a reasonable welcome to Italy although much of it is makeshift as authorities process the refugees.
However, this comes only after 40 minutes where we are introduced to a wealthy factory owner and his family in Brescia (where school and factory witness to the incoming migrants). Young son, Sandro, accompanies his father and a friend on a cruise which we see in too lengthy detail and then, as in Kipling’s classic, Captains Courageous, of a rich boy falling overboard and having to learn cultural tolerance and hard work on a fishing ship, he does likewise.
The picture of the refugees is sympathetic. A principal carer is a kindly but harassed priest. The parents are so glad to discover their son is alive that they try their best for the Romanian and his sister. Not everything is sweetness and light but the film opts for a hopeful and benign welcome to strangers.

Les miracles existent. Marco Tullio Giordana en a rencontré deux sur le chemin de son film. Le premier est dans le scénario : le jeune Sandro, fils d’un riche industriel italien, tombe du’un voilier sans que personne à bord ne s’en aperçoive et est recueilli bien plus tard par un bateau transportant des clandestins qui passait justement par là. Le deuxième est encore plus impressionnant : c’est un vrai miracle que ce film ait été retenu dans la sélection oficielle du Festival.
Car on reste confondu devant le côté préadolescent de cette oeuvre qui aligne imperturbablement invraisemblances, sentiments guimauve et aveuglement sociologique. Pourtant Marco Tullio Giordana n’est pas n’importe qui (I cento passi, La meglio gioventu). Alors, que lui est-il arrivé ? Un troisième miracle, celui-là d’inspiration diabolique ?
